One of the most moving stories of courage and compassion in the face of racial prejudice and human stupidity ever written, Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel is an American classic. Set in Alabama at a time when blacks in the Southern states were segregated from whites and forced to use other facilities (a fact of black history vividly portrayed in Tate Taylor's recent movie The Help), the story of Atticus Finch's defence of Tom Robinson is a classic courtroom drama. Gregory Peck's portrayal of the lawyer in Robert Mulligan's film adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird earned the actor an Academy Award and made Atticus Finch one of America's best loved film heroes.

First line:

'When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.'
