Having seemingly peaked with The Bends, Radiohead emerged two years later with a spiky and ‘difficult’ collection of songs far removed from the epic rock of the previous album. Eschewing the easy option of grafting stadium choruses onto every track, OK Computer is an album of distorted guitars and eerie atmospherics, welded together by Thom Yorke’s acutely modern lyrics. The album’s first single, ‘Paranoid Android’, perfectly encapsulated the band’s new agenda: a stunning tri-part song whose aura of restlessness is captured by its thrilling musical adventure. With this extraordinary album, they dragged intelligent rock music kicking and screaming into a new millennium. OK Computer is now widely regarded as one of the best, if not THE best album ever made.
