Muse formed in 1994 in Teignmouth, England, although they went under several different names before settling on their final choice, including Gothic Plague and Rocket Baby Dolls. They decided to take their music more seriously after winning a local Battle of the Bands competition, and within a few years they had built up a strong local following and earned a record deal with Taste Media, who would license their recordings to various other labels. Their early EPs sold well and showed great promise, and their 1999 debut album Showbiz earned encouraging reviews, and reached number 29 on the UK charts on the back of several excellent hit singles, three of which reached the Top 40. Muse truly found their sound with the release of an outstanding second album in 2001, Origin Of Symmetry. This laid down a marker for the group's exciting brand of alternative rock, which blends elements of progressive rock, space rock, metal, and classical music, amongst many other styles. They have become one of the UK's biggest rock bands, and established a following around the world, selling millions of albums in the process. They are widely regarded as one of the greatest live acts on the planet.
