Hubert Sumlin learned guitar from the age of eight, and after honing his skills playing in Mississippi juke joints, he met Howlin' Wolf at the age of 19. Wolf invited him to join his band in 1954, and it is in this role that he made a name for himself over many years (he also worked with several other top artists, including Muddy Waters). It was Sumlin's unique and brilliant guitar work that made so many of Wolf's songs special. His relationship with the legendary bluesman was often turbulent, but he was understandably devastated when Wolf died in 1976. Sumlin continued to perform and record. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002, but survived an operation to remove one of his lungs. He died in 2011 of heart failure.
