The most successful recording alias of singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, the critical reception afforded his 2007 debut made the album one of the year’s biggest sleeper hits. Crucially, Vernon arrived with a terrific story for critics to write about. He recorded For Emma, Forever Ago while holed up all alone in a remote cabin during the winter months in Wisconsin, nursing the wounds from a failed relationship. It helped that the album was also great, with only Vernon’s stark acoustic guitar and layered falsetto vocals occasionally fleshed out by discreet drums and horns (added later at a recording studio). The emotional detail of the lyrics provided further sustenance for fans and critics alike. Vernon showed he was not just a one-hit wonder by releasing the inventive Blood Bank EP in 2009.
