The Rolling Stones, alongside The Beatles, tower over modern rock music. The self-styled 'World's Greatest Rock Roll Band' have defied aging and the vagaries of musical fashion to continue to set the bench mark for all rock groups. Originally a blues-driven covers band, the development of the songwriting team of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger helped push the Stones to the forefront of the British Invasion of the 60s. As the decade wore on they reinvented themselves as an album band par excellence, with their late 60s and early 70s recordings marking one of the most brilliant creative periods of any major group. Inevitably the passing of time eventually dulled their creative spark, and the Stones entered the 90s (and, arguably, spent most of the 80s) as the world's premier live band. They continued to sell out arenas throughout the globe well into the new millennium, with crowds still happy to flock to see the ageless Mick Jagger gyrating out front, and the über-cool Keith Richards delivering his trademark sinewy lead guitar runs.
