The Monkees were arguably the first manufactured boy band, being put together for a television programme of the same name. The 1966 show helped the swiftly issued singles Last Train To Clarksville and I'm A Believer both shoot to the USA top spot, with the latter repeating the feat in the UK. Their debut album subsequently went platinum, although media controversy over the actual contribution of the band members to the output soon caused friction between studio and band, in particular the genuine musicians Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. Nonetheless a string of hit singles followed, including A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, Pleasant Valley Sunday and Daydream Believer. In a twist to the usual ending of these stories, their following album Headquarters was a massive success. However with the ending of the television show they swiftly went downhill. After a number of partial reunions the original quartet joined up again properly in 1996 to record Justus.
