Although he started life as a session guitarist in the 60s, (he was a superb guitar player) notably working with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and a few years with the The Beach Boys, by the end of the decade Glen Campbell was a fully-fledged country star. His hits include By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy, which are now classics of country and pop radio. The lush strings and smooth vocals on Campbell's records have made him the king of the country pop genre and brought huge commercial success. In later years he recorded several gospel and holiday albums and in 2005 Campbell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His 2008 album, Meet Glen Campbell, saw the veteran star tackle songs by contemporary acts such as Green Day, and the Foo Fighters with his trademark countrypolitan brilliance. In recent years he suffered from Alzheimer's and died in August 2017.
