Foo Fighters were formed in 1995 in Seattle, Washington, by Dave Grohl, formerly the drummer in Nirvana, but now guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter. The hype surrounding the release of their 1995 self-titled debut album was understandably huge, and it did not disappoint. Although some criticised the album for staying too close to the Nirvana framework, the vast majority recognised an excellent collection of hard-rocking, melodic songs. Since then they have gone from strength to strength. Grohl has established himself as one of the most accomplished songwriters in rock, and while their respect amongst critics has remained consistently high, their record sales have continued to climb. Each of their albums has achieved platinum status in the USA, UK, and numerous other countries. Grohl deserves enormous credit for his seamless transition from initially being known as the former drummer of Nirvana, to being recognised as the frontman of Foo Fighters. They are responsible for some of the most memorable rock singles of the 90s and 00s, and they’re not finished yet.
